The first holiday the family took was to Cordoba, Sevilla and Malaga in order to see family. Then they continued on “the footsteps of Gerald Brennan, the author whose works on Spain Eric particularly liked. He wanted to see what the present-day Al Pujara would be like. They finished their three-week holiday in Granada, admiring the Alhambra. They did not overdo the culture, they saw to it that the children had plenty of opportunities to play and to swim in the sea. Their Austin Maxi was a comfortable family car.

On future holidays they would tour the Pyrenees, and see Barcelona and its surroundings. Another time they would tour the North West past Salamanca to Santiago de Compostela. Their favourite outings were to Flamenco shows. As Eric had started to learn some flamenco early on in their relationship at Philippa’s instigation, he could follow the new courses with some ease. Philippa as well as the children all took lessons in it. They got a lot fun from having little family shows of flamenco and sevillanas.

Sir Philip and Lady Saunders were frequent visitors. Eric loved the family’s being together. He had been so starved of normal family life in his childhood home that now he took full advantage of his own. He did make a point of going to see his parents, in secret from the children, twice a year. It had been easy from France and the same applied from Spain. When he visited them, he mainly had to listen to complaints about the neighbourhood and tales from the pub and from the bingo. His parents had no normal curiosity about Eric’s life at all.
